"Lincoln & Liberty!" Songs from the Time of Honest Abe
Local 845 & The Howland Present The Lost Radio Rounders Lincoln & Liberty! Songs from the Time of Honest Abe
Lincoln and Liberty! is an all-acoustic survey of song from across Lincoln’s lifetime, featuring Civil War anthems of the North and South, Stephen Foster standards, railroad work chants, Gold Rush shouts, jubilees, campaign ditties, spirituals, memorial ballads and more – including almost forgotten parodies of popular songs of the day. But these aren’t just dusty classics. Many of the selections – such as “Dixie,” “Camptown Races,” “Go Down, Moses,” “The E-ri-e” and “Hard Times” – will be instantly familiar slices of Americana, accompanied by guitar, mandolin, dobro, banjo and ukulele.
February 12, 2009 marked the bicentennial of the birth of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Across the nation, events and celebrations marked the anniversary, but few matched the unique blend of song, story and fun offered by the Lost Radio Rounders’ presentation of “Lincoln and Liberty!” Due to the unprecedented success of the program, Tom Lindsay and Michael Eck are continuing to delight audiences of all ages with “Lincoln and Liberty!” throughout 2010 as well.
And the show hits Beacon on Abe’s 201st birthday, with a big night behind the big red doors at The Howland Cultural Center. Honest Abe’s tumultuous term as president was historic in every respect, but few stuffy educational annals preserve the music of the day, much less in vibrant live performance.
For the past three years Lost Radio Rounders (featuring Lindsay and Eck, who first performed together in the 1980s as part of the legendary roots rock band, Chefs of the Future) have been wowing crowds across the region with “The Gospel Train,” an ever-changing program of ‘Historic American Spiritual Music,’ as well as shows like “American Favorite Ballads: Songs from Folkways” and “Wildwood Flower: Songs of The Original Carter Family.” |
