Sun - Apr 11 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM CAPS presents: Book Signing & Reading with Will Nixon
Will Nixon 's new poetry book, Love in the City of Grudges (FootHills Publishing), has been called “a poetic coming of age story” “in which the American family romance morphs into Night of the Living Dead.” Ranging from suburban childhood reveries to the misadventures of a young man in gentrifying Hoboken of the 1980s to the concluding sequence of zombie poems that mix family history with movie characters, the book finds both humor and sadness in a life's journey with “a novel's sweep.” “We're embarrassed to smile, but page after page we do,” said the poet Djelloul Marbrook. Of Will Nixon 's previous poetry book, My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse (FootHills Publishing), the poet Mikhail Horowitz said, “ Will Nixon 's narrative poems strike a rare balance between a child's sense of wonder and a skeptic's dry, knowing assessment of the world. We know at every wrenching turn or droll digression that we're in the presence of a born storyteller.” With Michael Perkins Will Nixon has co-authored, Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town (Bushwhack Books), an essay collection that began with walking columns for the Woodstock Times. This book was the #1 paperback bestseller of 2009 at the Golden Notebook, Woodstock's independent bookstore. It's also available at bushwhackbooks.com. Will Nixon grew up in the Connecticut suburbs, lived in Hoboken and Manhattan as a young man, then fled to a Catskills log cabin in 1996. He now lives in Woodstock. As an environmental journalist in the past, he was a contributing editor to The Amicus Journal, published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, and a special correspondent for the Adirondack Explorer. His poems have appeared in many literary journals, several regional anthologies, and two earlier chapbooks, When I Had It Made (Pudding House) and The Fish Are Laughing (Pavement Saw). His work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and listed in Best American Essays 2004. His website is willnixon.com.
Open to the public. Donations accepted.

Fri - Apr 23 8:00 PM Howland Presents:The Inbetweens
THE INBETWEENS emerged in the summer of 2002, from the roots of collective improvisation, curiosity, and like minds. Before they were the Tweens, they each lived in Boston, where they each spent time gigging and studying at the New England Conservatory of Music with gurus such as Bob Moses, George Garzone, John Lockwood, and John Abercrombie. In the fall of 02' the boys migrated to Brooklyn, where they each spent an entire year eating, sleeping, and rehearsing in a cozy lil' 3-bedroom apartment, appropriately lodged "inbetween" Brooklyn's own Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery.
Since then the trio has completed a self-titled debut album at Clinton Recording Studios, in Manhattan, and has been performing regularly in the Northeast and the midwest. Some listeners consider them a power trio, but their energetic musical conversations draw in people from all backgrounds: popular to improvised. The Inbetweens are not afraid to enter uncharted territories. They trust each other and take risks for the sake of the music.
Some will call it fusion. Some will call it progressive. Some will venture to say it's like hearing the Grateful Dead improv through Miles' 'Bitches Brew'. Either or, it's intense and hypnotic beyond doubt.
$12.00 tickets available www.howlandculturalcenter.org Refreshments and light snacks available.
Limited seating. Handicap accessible.
